Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.
This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns
In a document approving the detention, the judge said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.
His son, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the vigil would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of planning to ask for protection through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
International Reactions
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader President Trump, leading him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
He is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also asked that he be allowed to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was prevented because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the moment, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
