The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like typical biological terror, but within Together resides a intense examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they still love each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
