Conservative reactions to the limited release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a delicate legal matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo describing the censorship procedure.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and image are visible in some of the materials, the extensive black blocks raise serious concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly called for greater openness.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s document release grossly fails to adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Release
But, some rightwing pundits and former President loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.
The release—from a justice department led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in photographs have their identities obscured.
But a few do not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to go on the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Releases Response
Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been concealing those files for months only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Seems Muted
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that preceded the legislative approval to pass a bill requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative personalities were provided physical binders of files that contained no new data.
