Patients Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using such drugs need to be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
