EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
