RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces participating in this strike for their skill and their valour," Healey added. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
