Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
