A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
